In Victoria, patients with severe burn injuries are transported to two specialised burns centres which are staffed and equipped appropriately to manage burns. These specialist burns units are located within designated state Major Trauma Services (MTS). These are the Victorian Adult Burns Service (VABS) at the Alfred and the Burns Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. Severe burn injuries are:

  • Burns >20%TBSA
  • High Voltage Electrical Injury
  • Inhalation Injury

Consultation with Burn Services should occur for patients who meet the ANZBA Referral Criteria and appropriate transfer arrangements organised as necessary.

In addition, the Burn Services accepts referrals for the  Outpatient Management of burns not requiring admission as well as wound care advice.

The Alfred Hospital gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support and contribution of Skilled Medical in funding this project.  For more information on Skilled Medical, please visit www.skilledmedical.com
